Cruising Through
A bull elephant bathing and playing after pushing buffalo from the river—made stronger by the brush I originally wished was not there.
Cruising Through comes from one of my all-time favorite elephant sightings. After pushing buffalo out of the river, this bull began bathing and playing. At the time I was frustrated that brush kept blocking the clean view I wanted. In the end that obstruction gave the photographs their character: his eyes disappear, the image takes on a noir quality, and attention shifts to tusks, skin, water, and especially the dynamic trunk.
