Pouring Over the Dragon’s Back
For a few minutes, the mountains seem to pour light into the bushveld.
I have been fortunate enough to watch this phenomenon several times from Nonwane, our research station in South Africa. Near the end of the day, heavy cloud cover settles above the Drakensberg while the setting sun finds narrow openings along the mountain horizon.
The last light becomes pinched between cloud and mountain, breaking into stark columns of gold that spill over the ridgelines and descend toward the bushveld below. A few minutes later, the sun is gone and the beams disappear.
The glossy metal surface is particularly suited to this photograph, giving depth to the dark blues of the cloud cover while allowing the golden sunbeams to retain their intensity and contrast.
